Barcodes are most frequently used as a unique ID that directs to the Pass records on the PassKit server. This enables you to consult the PassKit server to, for example:
- update a balance;
- void a coupon or;
- confirm that a ticket is valid.
However, you do not need to have a barcode on your Pass. For example, if you want to use the Pass just as a communication channel or there is no redemption involved, then you would not need a barcode.
E.g. If you are a restaurant and you just want to use the Pass to communicate to your customers the daily lunch special, then you would not necessarily need a barcode.
