Introduction

Apple and Google Wallet support NFC Passes, allowing user to store and use digital passes like loyalty cards, tickets, coupons and membership cards directly from their mobile devices. These passes communicate with NFC Devices using Apple VAS (Value Added Services) and Google SmartTap protocols. To use these technologies, you'll need specific hardware that supports them. Here's what you need to know.

Apple VAS

NFC Readers

You'll need an NFC reader that supports Apple's Enhanced Contactless Polling (ECP) protocol. This is a proprietary extension to the standard NFC protocol.

Certification

The NFC reader must be certified by Apple to work with Apple VAS.

Where to find them

  • VTAP: VTAP specializes in NFC readers for mobile wallets. They offer a range of Apple VAS certified readers, such as the VTAP100 series, which are also compatible with Google SmartTap. These devices can extract and decrypt NFC pass data from both Apple and Google Wallets. Learn more about VTAP NFC Wallet Readers here.

  • ID TECH: ID TECH offers NFC readers that support both Apple VAS and Google SmartTap. Learn more ID Tech Contactless Readers here.

  • Zebra TC22/TC27 Mobile Computers: Zebra's TC22 and TC27 handheld mobile computers are rugged, enterprise-grade devices with NFC functionality. These devices are compatible with Apple VAS and Google SmartTap, making them ideal for retail, hospitality, and event management. Learn more about the TC22/TC27 here.

  • ACS WalletMate II Mini: This versatile NFC reader module is certified for Apple and Google VAS protocols. It seamlessly supports virtual passes like loyalty cards, tickets, and IDs across iOS and Android, offering a smooth, cardless experience with simple tap-to-go functionality. It also supports ISO 14443 Type A & B, MIFARE®, FeliCa, ISO 18092 NFC, and ISO 15693 cards and works with Windows®, Linux®, macOS®, and Android™. Learn more about ACS WalletMate II Mini here.

Google SmartTap

NFC Readers

You'll need an NFC reader that supports the standard NFC protocols (ISO/IEC 14443 A/B) and is compatible with Google's SmartTap technology.

Certification

While not as strict as Apple's certification, it's recommended to use readers that are certified by Google or have been tested for compatibility with Google Pay.

Where to find them

  • VTAP: As mentioned above, VTAP offers readers that support both Apple VAS and Google SmartTap.

  • ID TECH: As mentioned above, ID TECH offers readers that support both Apple VAS and Google SmartTap.

  • Zebra TC22/TC27 Mobile Computers: These devices are also compatible with Google SmartTap, providing a versatile solution for businesses looking to integrate NFC-based loyalty programs, ticketing, or access control.

  • ACS WalletMate II Mini: As highlighted in the Apple VAS section, the WalletMate II Mini is also certified for Google Smart Tap and supports virtual passes on Android devices.

Choosing the Right Hardware

When selecting an NFC reader, consider your specific use case:

  • VTAP Devices: VTAP devices are designed for tap-and-go scenarios, typically where the NFC reader integrates with another application, such as a POS system or backend software. If your use case involves simply reading NFC passes and sending the data to another system (e.g., for coupon redemption or event check-in), VTAP is a great choice.

  • Zebra TC22/TC27 Mobile Computers: The Zebra TC22/TC27 is ideal for all-in-one applications where visual feedback and user interaction are required. These devices feature a built-in touchscreen display, allowing users to interact directly after tapping a pass. This makes them perfect for use cases like loyalty programs where you want to validate information or enter data directly on a screen following a tap.

  • ACS WalletMate II Mini: Ideal for integration into handheld devices, kiosks, and IoT devices due to its compact design and broad compatibility with operating systems.

Important Notes

  • Software: In addition to the hardware, you'll also need software that can process the data from the NFC Terminal and integrate with your system.

  • Apple NFC Pass Type Certificate: To issue NFC Passes, you'll bee an Apple Developer account that has been approved to issue NFC Pass Type Identifier Certificates - you can request NFC activation from the Apple Developer Portal (login required).

Recommendation:

  • Contactless payment terminals: Many modern contactless payment terminals already support both Apple VAS and Google SmartTap. If you're looking for a solution for accepting payments and passes, consider these terminals.

  • Specialized NFC readers: If you need a dedicated NFC reader for a specific use case, consider the following options:

    • VTAP: Best for tap-and-go scenarios, such as integrating with a POS system or backend application.

    • Zebra TC22/TC27 Mobile Computers: Ideal for all-in-one applications requiring visual feedback and user interaction.

    • ACS WalletMate II Mini: A compact and versatile module for integration into various devices and systems.

Remember to always check the specifications and documentation of any hardware you're considering to ensure it meets your needs and is compatible with the technologies you want to use.

Please note: This list provides examples of compatible hardware and is not exhaustive, as new devices and solutions are continually entering the market.
