How to renew a pass certificate to your PassKit Account

Introduction

Your Apple Pass Type ID certificate expires annually. To ensure uninterrupted service, it’s crucial to renew your certificate before it expires. While Apple typically sends a reminder email before the expiration date, we strongly recommend setting an annual reminder in your calendar at least 30 days before the expiry date.

IMPORTANT: Without a valid Apple Pass Type ID certificate, you will not be able to issue new passes or update existing ones.

Process

These instructions are for renewing a certificate in your PassKit account. If you are adding a certificate please follow these instructions.

1: Access Certificate in the PassKit Portal

  • Log in to the PassKit Portal.

  • Navigate to Home > Account > Certificates.

2: Initiate the Renewal Process

  • Locate the certificate you wish to renew.

  • Click the RENEW button next to it. A pop-up will appear.

3: Download the Certificate Signing Request (CSR)

  • Click DOWNLOAD CSR to save the Certificate Signing Request file to your computer.

4: Log in to Your Apple Developer Account

5: Create a New Certificate

  • Select the Pass Type ID you want to renew from the list.

  • Click Create Certificate.

6: Upload the CSR File

  • Leave the “Enter your Pass certificate Name” field blank.

  • Click Choose File and select the CSR file you downloaded from PassKit.

  • Click Continue.

7: Download the Renewed Certificate

  • Click Download to save the renewed certificate (the file will be named pass.cer) to your computer.

8: Upload the Renewed Certificate to PassKit

  • Return to the PassKit Portal.

  • Drag and drop the pass.cer file into the Renew Certificate box.

9: Confirm the Renewal

  • Verify that the Valid To date of the certificate has been updated.


Final Step: Set a Reminder

Apple Pass Type ID certificates must be renewed every 12 months. To avoid missing the renewal deadline:
